The Story of Harmony

A Note from our Founder

Harmony Learning Center was not simply founded; it was called into existence by necessity. It began because of the pandemic, when children needed a place to learn, connect, and simply be kids.

One morning at 4 a.m., I woke up with absolute clarity: I had to create this. The world had shut down, and families were struggling. I turned to my husband, shared my vision, and he agreed—this was an initiative worth investing in.

Ten days later, I signed a lease for a former tutoring center and transformed it into a space for learning and support. Word spread organically as families reached out, sharing their need for support. Soon, I had a waitlist for children ages 4 to 12. I quickly brought together 35 families and another Montessori teacher, creating something greater than I had imagined. Parents, overwhelmed by remote learning, needed help. Children, isolated and confused, craved structure, socialization, and joy.

On that first morning, in the pouring rain, parents stood at the backdoor, entrusting me with something far greater than just their child’s education. They trusted that I wasn’t only protecting them from a virus, but that I was preserving their childhood, their mental health, and their sense of normalcy.

What began as an urgent response to a crisis quickly became something much bigger. As the world reopened, I realized that the pandemic’s youngest generation—toddlers who had only known a life of isolation—had been just as deeply affected as their older peers. One day, I watched my two-year-old daughter press her tiny hands against the front door of glass, matching the handprints of another child on the other side. In that moment, I understood that while they may not have expressed it, they had lost something profound: the foundational years of socialization.

That moment changed everything. I opened my doors to a small group of parents and their toddlers, refusing to let society dictate what was best for them. Yes, there were risks, but so were the risks of doing nothing.

Harmony was never just a school. It was a place where children could receive support for remote learning, and over time, it evolved into a children's activity center—a safe, nurturing space that adapted to meet the needs of the community. It became a lifeline. I built a business model that prioritized accessibility, offering as many scholarships as possible while ensuring my staff was paid well and our doors remained open. I was "building the car as I drove it," saying yes to fellow small business owners who had lost their own spaces, offering them a place to rebuild, and adapting to challenges as they came.

Families saw Harmony as a warm, innovative, and inclusive space where children were truly seen, heard, and valued. Our programs expanded beyond the pandemic response, embracing hands-on learning, community engagement, and holistic education that nurtured not just academics, but the whole child.

But the true story of Harmony is not one of rapid growth or business success. It is a story of children—their laughter, their friendships, and the sense of belonging they carried with them beyond our walls. It is a story of parents who trusted, who sacrificed, and who knew their children’s well-being mattered most. It is a story of a community that came together in an uncertain time and proved that when we put children at the heart of our decisions, something magical happens.

Though Harmony’s physical space has since closed, its legacy lives on. It was never just about a center. It was about a movement, a belief that education should honor each child, meet them where they are, and create a world where they can thrive. That belief will continue, no matter where learning takes place.

And like most things in life, I had no idea what I was doing and, at the same time, knew exactly what I was doing. Now, I embark on another adventure in the same spirit. It’s in my blood.
